“Some five cho onwards [from Miyanoshita] is the village of Dogashima.

“The well wooded hills environing the place give a feeling of snugness and mysterious ease.

“Consequently there are not the fine prospects and views of other resorts; but this makes Dogashima a pleasant spot for the hot and humid summer.”

“The country around the hamlet of Dogashima is beautiful beyond description.

“Picturesque little villas nestle in the forest, and it seems that one could pass his life happilly in this charming spot. Cascades, large and small, wind through the rocks on the mountain side. Along the Miyanoshita road the scene is no less fair. Can there be a region more beautiful than this?

“Picturesque Japan offers to artist, poet, scholar, material for the work of a lifetime. We might truly call this part of the country a family of mountains, for mountains are seen at every turn, and so majestic and lofty that man realizes his insignificance in the presence of these masterpieces of creation. Farther on is Tonosawa. What a grand panorama is before us!”
