“I must apologize for not having written to you for a long time. These pictures are the buildings of the Tokio Industrial Exhibition. I like postcards and photographs. Please give me your photo. S. Hata”

A pen-pal depicting the Meiji Industrial Exhibition grounds at Ueno Park, 1907. The Mitsubishi Pavilion is in the distance. Among the highlights of the 1907 Industrial Exhibition: a Ferris Wheel (Japan’s second), electric lighting, the first enclosed swimming pool in Japan, and a large water slide that sent passengers in canoe-like vessels rumbling down its ramp into the waters of Shinobazu Pond.
