Akasaka Mitsuke New Years Greeting, 1909.

A New Years’ greeting written over an image of streetcars rolling past a former daimyo estate. At the base of the hill is a collection of village residences and teahouses that would grow into one of Tokyo’s popular entertainment districts. In the 1970s, when I lived in Tokyo, it would become the locale of the Akasaka Tokyu Hotel, the Sanno Hotel, Byblos, and Mugen.
