Mampei Hotel, Tokyo, c. 1940. As with the illustrated Imperial Diet, the hotel (inset) shared a view of the Imperial Palace across the moat from the Hanzomon gate. It was located across the street from the German embassy.
The Tokyo Mampei Hotel branch opened in 1932, one of four new branches opened by the “International Sightseeing Hotels, Ltd.” to expand the prestigious Mampei brand to Atami (in 1927), Tokyo (1932), Yashima (1932), and Nagoya (1933).
The Tokyo branch was shuttered in 1939 due to wartime shortages but was reopened during the Occupation and operated by the U.S. military as officer billets until 1952 when the hotel was returned to civilian control.
During the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo Mampei Hotel served as one lodging reserved for journalists covering the Games.
