Mt. Fuji from Kamakura seaside, c. 1920.

“Kamakura has a beach that faces Sagami Wan (a deep and beautiful bay which opens southward toward the Pacific). It also has a pleasant view of Mt. Fuji. At Kamakura, Mt. Fuji is seen in context to sea level … Sagami Wan [bay] preserves a romantic image of Japan. Here there are wind-shaped pine trees along golden beaches that surround a ‘lapus lazuli’* sea.”

From the Narrow Passage, by David T. Gochenour II, 2001

[Note: *lapus lazuli, a deep blue semi-precious stone prized since antiquity for its intense color.]
